‘Women Talking’ by Miriam Toews

Hello my lovely readers,

This Sunday I’ve got an interesting book to review for you.

Told through the eyes of one man, allowed to be present due to his ability to write, this is the story of a group of Mennonite women conducting a secret meeting. For two years they have suffered attacks from demons in the night, punishments for their sins, they are told. However, they have now discovered these attacks were in fact committed by the men in their colony and now have one night to decide whether to stay in their colony, all they have ever known, or whether to risk escaping to protect their daughters, with no skills or knowledge of the outside world.

I adore the premise of this book and found the general story of the women inspiring and emotional, especially as they are all such hugely different characters.

However, the discussion process in the meeting itself was repetitive, as I’m sure it would be when there’s such a huge decision to be made but it made certain parts feel slightly tedious.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

All in all, a very important story to be told, particularly in the troubling times we’re experiencing in the world at the moment, but I’m not sure this was the most effective way for it to be told.

Back soon!
