Book Review: ‘Christmas at the Borrow a Bookshop’ by Kiley Dunbar

Merry Christmas, book lovers!

The big day is almost upon us, and I hope you’re feeling ready: presents wrapped, cheese in the fridge, bucks fizz on stand-by! I realised last night that I’ve officially become a grown-up (probably fitting as today is also my 34th birthday) as I did the Christmas food shop at 9pm to avoid the crowds, then proceeded to tell my boyfriend he couldn’t drink any of the beer I’d bought as that was Christmas Day beer!

Anyway, there’s just enough time to squeeze in one more festive romance book and I have the perfect recommendation! ‘Christmas at the Borrow a Bookshop’ is Kiley Dunbar’s follow-up to ‘The Borrow a Bookshop Holiday‘, but if you haven’t read the first in the series, don’t be put off; it works perfectly well as a standalone novel.

What is the book about?

Two weeks before Christmas, Magnus arrives in Clove Lore from Iceland. Following the failure of his own bookshop, his brother thought it would be fitting/funny to send him to the Borrow a Bookshop for Christmas. But Magnus doesn’t see the funny side and definitely doesn’t need a reminder of how badly his business failed.

Meanwhile, Alex is escaping her adulterous ex boyfriend and best friend on her late father’s boat, when she runs into some rough waters and is rescued on Clove Lore’s coast. As soon as Magnus sees her, he is enchanted by her mermaid-like looks and she is equally enamoured by his warm and caring aura.

However, a horrific storm is on its way, and Magnus and Alex have their own troubles to work through. Can they recover from the devestation of the storm and their pasts as Christmas comes closer?

Should you read this book?

Well, as you probably know by now, I am big fan of Kiley Dunbar’s books! She always writes a warm, cosy romance – whatever the season – and this was no exception. Magnus and Alex were such lovely characters to follow, and their romance was written both beautifully and believably. Over the course of just 300 pages, it’s not easy to fall in love with two characters, but these two had tons of passion and humour that made their relationship all too easy to love!

I also like the community that Dunbar has built in Clove Lore. As I said, you don’t need to read the first book in advance – although I would highly recommend that one too! – as the minor characters who play a part in both stories are equally well developed in both books. I particularly love Jowan, the owner of the Borrow a Bookshop and Aldous the adorable dog, and Minty, the village ‘leader’, who takes responsbility for all the unique events held in the village, including the donkey parade!

Final thoughts

All in all, a dreamy festive romance novel with just the right amount of dramatic danger for Magnus to become the ultimate sexy hero!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Whatever you’re reading right now, I hope you have a fabulous Christmas, and take the opportunity to engage with the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod if you can! (Read all about it in this book!)

Back soon!
